The historical source of knowledge about Indian society and culture before Christ up to 2600 BC is based on archeological evidence through excavations. India witnessed Paleolithic Ages before 10,000 BC. Stone tools like hand axe, cleavers, scrappers, borders, blades and bruins have been found in the valleys and river beds throughout the country. Mesolithic tools are founded relating to the period from 10,000 to 6,000 BC covering India from East to West and North to South.

Period from 3000 to 2600 BC is marked by earlier city-state Harappa Civilization called Indus Valley Civilization. Earlier civilization is known to be Dravidian Civilization. Four south Indian States are called Dravidian States. 




The Dravidian Civilization is said to have been attacked by Aryans through Himalayan mountain passes. Aryans settled mainly in North India. The period of their sway in India between 1200 BC to 500 BC is called the Vedic Era. Buddha was born in 550 BC. But Buddhism spread in India during 4th BC onwards with the support of native empires like Mauryas and Satvahans (322 BC to 30 BC).
