Is it the rape of Indian Tourism?

Indian tourism industry ponders in worry in wake of recent surge in rape cases in the Indian vicinities. Reports pouring in clearly suggest that tourists are shunning India as an aftermath. With a whopping drop of 35% female tourists visiting India in the first three months of 2013 is indeed worth considering taking into account Delhi’s aim to double foreign exchange earnings from travel.

India, as a tourist destination, showed its buoyant character in terms of travel bagging $17.7bn from 6.6 million foreign visitors in the previous year, 2012. However, the recent series of rapes have bewildered the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India as they witnessed the contrary opinion by 1,200 tour operators who stood in sharp contradiction to the government's claim of rosy picture. According to the available data, overall reduction of 25% in tourist visits down has been reported after Delhi gang rape.

Government of India must take necessary steps so as to prevent other Asian destinations including Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam take advantage of the situation. Apart from preventing rapes on the streets, it must tender unprecedented security especially to the tourist destinations.

This can be easily done coordinating with the organized body of Indian tour operators. For those who visit India must feel safe and secure as a rape does not involve a man and a woman but represent an assault on the age old values of peace and harmony prevalent in the Indian context.
